Lomi lomi originates in Hawaii, where it was practised in ancient times by traditional healers (kahuna), as part of a culture in which touch was seen as an act of care and harmony. The name means “to caress” or “to knead”, and the philosophy behind it emphasises flow, rhythm and balance between body and spirit.
The technique
What makes lomi lomi unique is the unbroken flow of the movements: the therapist uses the forearms and palms, with plenty of warm oil, for long strokes that travel across the whole body in a continuous rhythm.
