The guide below walks you step by step through your first session, from the moment you walk in until the next morning.<\/p>\n

Before the session: what to wear, what to eat and what to tell your therapist<\/h2>\n

Avoid a heavy meal in the hour or two before, because some positions put pressure on the abdomen. Drink water, but not too much, and avoid alcohol, which changes how you perceive pressure. Come in loose clothes you can move freely in: jogging or yoga trousers and a T-shirt are ideal. If you do not have any, we give you suitable clothes at the salon.<\/p>\n

Before you start, tell your therapist if you have a herniated disc, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, a recent operation or injury. Even if it seems minor, this is what decides which stretches are done and which are skipped. If you are pregnant, classic Thai massage is not suitable: there is a dedicated pregnancy treatment, with different positions and a different intensity. If you have a fever, an infection or acute inflammation, postpone your booking.<\/p>\n

The first minutes: the chat, the mat and why you stay dressed<\/h2>\n

The session starts with a short conversation about sensitive areas and what you expect from the massage. Then you lie on the mat, on your back, dressed, with no oil and nothing else to prepare. Staying dressed is not just about comfort: Thai massage works through pressure and stretching, not by gliding over the skin, so clothes do not get in the way.<\/p>\n

The therapists at Bali Temple come from Bali and work without hurry. The first minutes are deliberately slow, so you can get used to the touch and the rhythm. If you feel nervous, this is the moment to say so. Nobody expects you to know how it is done.<\/p>\n

How the session unfolds, from feet to shoulders<\/h2>\n

The sequence follows a clear logic, which is why nothing comes suddenly. It starts at the feet and moves gradually up the legs, then the back and the arms, and the session ends at the neck and shoulders. First come the pressures that warm the tissue, with the palms and thumbs, in a slow and predictable rhythm. The wider stretches are placed towards the end, when the muscles are already prepared.<\/p>\n

Your therapist tells you when to turn onto your front or your side and when to breathe deeply. After ten minutes, most people stop anticipating anything and simply breathe. The last minutes are quiet, so you do not get up straight out of the stretches.<\/p>\n

Does it hurt? How firm the pressure is and how to say it is too much<\/h2>\n

The pressure is deep but diffuse, without the gliding friction of an oil massage. On denser areas such as the thighs, the therapist may use her elbows or forearms, but the intensity is set by you. The rule is simple: pleasant discomfort, the kind that makes you breathe out slowly, is normal. Sharp pain, or pain that makes you hold your breath, is not.<\/p>\n

You can speak at any time and ask for less or more pressure without interrupting anything. A simple “a bit softer, please” is enough. At a first session the therapist starts at a moderate intensity anyway and only increases it once she sees you are relaxed.<\/p>\n

The stretches, if you are not flexible<\/h2>\n

Many people worry that Thai massage is for flexible people. It is not. The stretches are done within the mobility you have today, not that of someone who has practised yoga for ten years. The therapist lifts your leg, rotates your hip or brings you into a gentle twist exactly as far as your body allows, and stops before the point of tension.<\/p>\n

Your part is not to help. It sounds strange, but the most common mistake at a first session is tensing the muscles to support the movement. Let yourself go heavy, breathe and let gravity do the work. The softer you are, the gentler and more effective the stretch.<\/p>\n

60 or 90 minutes for the first time<\/h2>\n

For a first session, 60 minutes are enough to work through the whole body at a calm pace and find out how you like the pressure. The 90-minute option makes sense when you want the therapist to spend longer on problem areas, for example the back and hips after long hours at a desk, or when you already know you like this type of massage.<\/p>\n

If you cannot decide, choose 60 minutes. After the first session you will know whether you want more time next time.<\/p>\n

After the session: that evening and the next day<\/h2>\n

Straight afterwards, most people describe an ease of movement and a pleasant mental clarity, sometimes with a brief floating feeling as they get up from the mat. Get up slowly, drink a glass of water and give yourself a few minutes before you leave. That evening, avoid intense physical effort.<\/p>\n

The next day you may feel mild muscle tenderness, similar to what you feel after a good stretching session, especially if some areas were very tense. It usually fades within 24-48 hours. It is not a sign that something went wrong, but that the work went deep.<\/p>\n

When to come back and what changes at the second session<\/h2>\n

If you enjoyed it, one session every two or three weeks is a good rhythm to keep the mobility you have gained. The second session is almost always better than the first: you know what to expect, and your therapist already knows where you are tense and what pressure you like.<\/p>\n
