Reflexology is a technique in which pressure is applied with the fingers to specific zones of the sole, which are thought to mirror the rest of the body. The core idea is a map: the toes correspond to the head, the arch to the digestive organs and the heel to the pelvis. Below you will find the foot map zone by zone, the difference between the right and the left sole, what actually happens when a reflex point is pressed, and how a reflexology session works at Bali Temple.<\/p>\n

What reflexology is and where the foot map comes from<\/h2>\n

Reflexology works through firm, precise pressure, with the thumb and the knuckles, on small areas of the sole. Unlike a regular foot massage, which relaxes the muscles locally, reflexology follows a map: each zone of the sole is linked to a part of the body.<\/p>\n

Pressure techniques on the feet have a long history in Asia, but today’s form is more recent. In the early 20th century, the American doctor William Fitzgerald divided the body into ten vertical zones running all the way to the fingers and toes. In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham, who worked as a physiotherapist, used them to draw the first detailed maps of the sole. The maps used today still start from hers, with small differences from one school to another.<\/p>\n

The foot map: which zone corresponds to each part of the body<\/h2>\n

The easiest way is to picture the sole as a whole body standing upright: the toes are the head, the heel is the pelvis, and the inner edge, the one by the big toe, is the spine. In short, this is the map used in reflexology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

One important point: this is a working map used in reflexology, not an anatomical one. There are no organs in the sole, and the nerves of the foot are not wired directly to the liver or the kidneys. The map tells the therapist where to work, not what is happening inside the body.<\/p>\n

Right sole and left sole: why they are not the same<\/h2>\n

Each sole corresponds to the half of the body on the same side. That is why the zones for organs found on both sides, such as the lungs, kidneys, eyes and ears, appear on both soles, while those for organs placed on one side only appear on a single sole.<\/p>\n

On the right sole<\/strong>, the reflexology map places the liver and the gallbladder, below the ball of the foot towards the outer edge, plus the start of the large intestine and the appendix area, close to the heel.<\/p>\n

On the left sole<\/strong> you find the heart, below the ball of the foot, the spleen, most of the stomach and the end of the large intestine.<\/p>\n

The head, the spine and the pelvis are worked on both soles. In a full session your therapist goes through both, even if you came for a single area.<\/p>\n

What actually happens when a reflex point is pressed<\/h2>\n

The sole has thousands of nerve endings packed into a small surface, which makes it one of the most sensitive areas of the body. Slow, firm pressure there sends a calming signal: breathing deepens, the pace slows down and the muscles let go. Many people fall asleep during the session, and not by chance.<\/p>\n

Research so far mostly shows effects on relaxation, anxiety and general comfort. There is no evidence that pressing a particular point heals the matching organ on the map. That is why at Bali Temple we treat reflexology as what it is: a deeply relaxing therapy, not a medical treatment.<\/p>\n

Nor does a more sensitive point mean that its organ has a problem. Most of the time the sensitivity comes from thinner skin in that area, from your shoes or from tired feet.<\/p>\n

People choose reflexology mostly when they feel stressed and tired, when they sleep badly or when their legs feel heavy after long hours standing. It is also a good option if you want to relax without undressing and without the pressure of a full body massage.<\/p>\n

How a reflexology session works at Bali Temple<\/h2>\n

The session starts with a short chat: how you feel, whether you have painful or sensitive areas and whether there is any condition your therapist should keep in mind. Then you settle in comfortably and your therapist prepares your feet with oil.<\/p>\n

The first minutes are a warm-up, with broad movements that relax the ankle and the sole. Then comes the work on the map, zone by zone, usually from the toes towards the heel, with light pressure at first and firmer pressure as the foot relaxes. On sensitive areas the pressure eases, and you can always ask for lighter or firmer.<\/p>\n

Afterwards most people feel light on their feet and calm for several hours. Get up slowly, drink a glass of water and, if you can, take the next half hour easy. Sleep the following night is usually deeper.<\/p>\n

Reflexology or foot massage: what is the difference<\/h2>\n

A classic foot massage works on the muscles and tissues, with kneading, gliding strokes and broad pressure, to relax the foot. Reflexology uses targeted pressure, applied according to the map, and aims to relax the whole body, not just the foot. The feeling is different too: a massage is enveloping, reflexology is more precise and, in places, more intense.<\/p>\n
